of adalimumab 40-mg EOW versus EW dosing was examined during placebo-controlled and open-label study periods in patients with HS (three studies), psoriasis (two studies), Crohn’s disease (six studies), ulcerative colitis (three studies), and rheumatoid arthritis (one study).

Results

No new safety risks or increased rates of particular adverse events (AEs) were identified with EW dosing. In patients with HS or psoriasis, the overall safety of adalimumab 40-mg EOW and EW was generally comparable. In studies of adalimumab for non-dermatologic indications, including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and rheumatoid arthritis, the overall AE rates were similar for EW and EOW dosing.

Conclusion

In patients with HS or psoriasis, the safety of adalimumab EW and EOW was comparable and consistent with the expected adalimumab AE profile. The safety of adalimumab EW dosing in patients with dermatologic conditions is supported by data comparing adalimumab EW and EOW dosing for Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Discussing the benefits of IPL photo-rejuvenation on Isleena, the great new Wellness website

When it comes to “lunchtime procedures” with minimal downtime, photo-rejuvenation with IPL is one of the most effective and simple non-invasive skin treatments used to address irregular skin tone and compares favorably to most beauty salon treatments. Although it seems counter-intuitive, the most important way to reduce fluid retention in the face is to drink as much water as possible throughout the day. Avoid diuretics such as coffee and tea which cause further dehydration and exacerbate the problem. Ingestion of salty foods (the type we typically crave when hungover) will increase water retention and puffiness. If possible, work out - this will improve circulation, while sweating will reduce the salt load in the body to help reduce swelling. Cold compresses (ice cubes in a wash-cloth) help to reduce puffiness. Gently massaging the skin for 5-10 minutes can help to encourage lymphatic drainage. Moisturisers containing caffeine increase the circulation within the skin to help reduce excess swelling. Get some 'beauty sleep' - studies show that we appear more attractive when well rested! Elevating your head when sleeping by using two pillows will also improve drainage of fluid from facial skin, particularly from around the eyes."

Read the full Irish Independent's Christmas Survival Guide here

Prof Ryan talking about Hair Loss on Newstalk's Alive and Kicking

Hair loss can have a significant psychological impact on men and women - it can result in loss of confidence, anxiety and depression. A 2014 survey by the National Psoriasis Foundation found that 5-10% of people with psoriasis said that their disease had affected their career pathway, by turning down a promotion or leaving a job. This was higher still in patients who had joint involvement, with 12% turning down a promotion because of their psoriatic arthritis, and 21% leaving their job. Several studies have also shown that psoriasis can result in reduced productivity on the job. Studies of psoriatic arthritis patients show a 35-46% decrease in work productivity due to the impact of their disease.

Psoriasis can be embarrassing. The reaction of colleagues, particularly those with little knowledge about psoriasis who think psoriasis is an infection or contagious can be demoralising and stigmatising. The scales and flakes which can be visible on work suits, on desktops and other work areas can be distressing and humiliating. The psychological impact of psoriasis can be immense - psoriasis patients have higher rates of depression and anxiety, which in turn can affect work performance.

Read more about the effect of psoriasis on work life

Successful treatment of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis can have a dramatic impact on quality of life at work and on work productivity. Will my friends know I had Botox®?

Not if you are in the right hands! Botox® is a technique-sensitive treatment. A good result should be subtle but leave you looking fresher and more relaxed. You should not lose the ability to make normal facial expressions. Many women fear having an unnatural or “frozen” look. That's why it's important to be treated by an experienced dermatologist or plastic surgeon who is conservative in their approach, an expert in facial anatomy and who individualises your treatment. Talk to your specialist about the results you want from your treatment.

2. How does it work?

Botox® works by weakening selected facial muscles so that they cannot pull on the overlying skin, thereby reducing wrinkles. It does this by temporarily blocking the nerves to the muscles that are responsible for causing the wrinkles. Relaxing facial muscles can reduce and limit the size and depth of facial wrinkles for a more youthful look. With less movement, the skin surface gradually smooths out and the lines begin to fade.

3. How long does the treatment take?

Your dermatologist will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate Botox® treatment for you. The actual injection process takes about 5 minutes. It is the perfect lunchtime procedure – quick, minimally invasive and no downtime.

4. Does it hurt?

Patients report that being injected with Botox® feels like a pinch. If you are concerned about discomfort, we can apply a topical numbing cream before administering your treatment.

5. When will I see results?

You may begin to notice results within 48 to 72 hours for moderate to severe frown lines, with full effect at 2 weeks.

6. How long does it last? Do I have to wait until its all gone before I get more?

The effect typically lasts 3-4 months, sometimes longer with consistent treatment. Yes, it is better to wait until the effects of your previous treatment are almost gone before your next treatment so that you don't develop a "frozen" look.

7. Does Botox® Prevent Wrinkles?

Botox® is being used more and more frequently by people in their late 20s and 30s who are trying to prevent fine lines becoming etched into the skin. The theory is that by starting Botox® earlier, people, and their muscles, can learn not to make certain expressions that contribute to worsening their lines. This has been examined by observing identical twins, one of whom had been using Botox® for years, while the other had not. The twin using Botox® was significantly less wrinkled and appeared younger.

8. What are the risks? Are you allergy tested before you get it done?

Side effects may include minor bruising, discomfort or pain at the injection sites, headaches, drooping eyelids (2-5%), and swelling of the eyelids. Over-injecting or injecting too low on the forehead can also cause brows to droop and create a heavy look - this can't be erased - you have to wait until the Botox wears off. True allergic reactions are extremely rare, almost unheard of, and there is no allergy test before the procedure.

9. What is the treatment cost?

Your cost depends on the number of areas treated: forehead wrinkles, the lines between your eyes, and crows’ feet are priced as separate areas; typically €250 to €500 total. Be wary of “cheap” Botox—if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Many clinics in Dublin are using other forms of botulinum toxin instead of true Botox®. It is more important to find an experienced specialist who will take the time to understand your treatment goals and develop a treatment plan that is right for you. Make sure your dermatologist or plastic surgeon is on the Irish Specialist Register for Dermatology or Plastic Surgery (www.medicalcouncil.ie).

10. Is there anything I need to do before Botox treatment?

No. Just bring the wrinkles.

Say goodbye to stubborn fat.
